Taste Washington’s Wine Country at 13moons

by ,

Thanks to Washington’s ideal soil and weather conditions, the wine industry continues to flourish and grow. In fact, Washington has the highest percent of wines that rate 90 points or more, compared to other major wine regions, with the lowest average cost. What makes Washington wine all that? To find out, let’s journey to some of Washington State’s 14 different American Viticultural Areas (AVA)!

Under each AVA, you’ll find a few of the Washington wines from that region that you can try at 13moons.

Columbia Valley AVA

Established in 1984, the Columbia Valley AVA is Washington State’s largest viticulture area, covering nearly 11 million acres — that’s one-third of the total state! This extensive area creates a variety of meso- and micro-climates that allow grapes for Riesling, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to grow successfully.

Wahluke Slope AVA

Located within the Colombia Valley appellation is the Wahluke Slope AVA. Established in 2006, this region spreads 81,000 acres and is home to more than 20 vineyards and at least three production facilities. It’s known for being the driest, warmest climate in the state, which allows for complete control of vine vigor and ripening through irrigation.

Yakima Valley AVA

Established in 1983, the Yakima Valley AVA was the first federally recognized AVA in Washington State. It’s home to more than 60 wineries and mainly produces Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, although many acres are dedicated to Riesling and Syrah.

Horse Heaven Hills AVA

The Horse Heaven Hills AVA is an expansive 570,000-acre region in southeast Washington. Thanks to its close proximity to the Columbia River, this region produces more than 35 different wine varieties, but its star wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah. You don’t have to take our word for it! The Horse Heaven Hills AVA is home to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd “100 point” wines in the Washington State.
