Ring In the Year of the Monkey at Swinomish

by ,

For most Americans, the most notable thing about February 8th will be that it’s the day after the 50th Super Bowl. In Asia, though, it’s a very different story—that Monday marks the Lunar New Year, one of the most important holidays in China, as well as Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and many other nations.

Also called the Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year is a centuries-old tradition that is celebrated with food, firecrackers, and well-wishes for the coming year—which, this year, is the Year of the Monkey.

What’s Lucky In The Year Of The Monkey

In Western culture, we tend to look at the 12 Zodiac signs of the stars; if you know your “sign,” it’s most likely one of these dozen. However, in much of the Eastern world, it’s the 12 signs of the moon that people look to for guidance and input about their personality traits, future, and potential mates.

One component of the Chinese New Year, though, is the idea of fortune or luck—and each zodiac sign has its own lucky numbers, colors, and even flowers.

Lucky Numbers: 1, 7, 8

Lucky Colors: white, blue, gold

Lucky Flowers: chrysanthemum

Those born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be mischievous, curious, clever, and playful.
